On April 20th, 1915 America’s first combat sortie was flown by Lt. Byron Q. Jones. 

Byron Quimby JonesLt Jones launched from Old Fort Brown Cavalry Drill Field near Brownsville, TX to conduct reconnaissance on the troop movements of the Mexican revolutionist Pancho Villa.  The flight lasted 20 minutes, achieved an altitude of 2,600 feeet, and was fired upon by Villa’s forces.
